Today my heart is breaking for the many children left orphaned by the tsunami is Asia last week. Many of these children were vacationing with parents from other places. These children had no ID. Can you imagine how much it could help a child is this situation to have a ID bracelet? The ID bracelet could contain their parent name, hotel where staying, home phone, plus the name and number of a relative in their home town that could be contacted? Do you protect your child is this way when traveling?

I got the privilege to be on a cruise ship this past month. I was again surprised to see so many children on board and on shore for the excursions with no physical ID. What if the child got separated from the parent on board a ship of 2500 people. An ID bracelet could contain the parents name and room number plus a name and number of a relative back home. And when onshore excursions the bracelet could contain the ships name and room number and parents name too. Our ID bracelets (id inside) are even waterproof so can be used while your child is swimming.

It really is a shame we have to be so proactive in our children's safety. But this world is changing. And we have to do everything we can to protect our children. It is like life insurance you buy hoping you never need to use it. I teach my daughter that is "Mommy is lost" ( they never think they are lost) to find another mommy with kids and give her the bracelet to call mommy. Do your kids know what to do if separated from you?

ADOPTION
How To Adopt!
By Kay Green of www.preciouskids.org

You are considering adoption! Maybe you have no children through infertility and are ready to start your family. Or you may have children by birth and know you are not finished. Or you may have an empty nest with your grown children gone and want to give to another child. But where do you start?

Let's begin with what kind of child you want to adopt?
* A healthy Caucasian newborn?
* An infant of any race?
* An international baby or child?
* An older child in the foster care system?
* A special needs child?

Knowing what kind of child you are looking for will tell you where to begin.

Agencies Adoptions can vary from $10,000-$35,000 for a newborn or infant. Caucasian infants will require the longest wait and highest fees. The wait for girls seems to be longer than boys.

Facilitators have fees from $1000-12000 for infants and newborns. They may also have other aged children available. Usually you will have additional legal fees added to this. Facilitators/Referral Services are not legal in all states. Check out your states laws.

Attorneys can work independently to finalize an adoption that you bring to them for $500-15000 or some will advertise and find you a child too with fees up to $20,000.

Private Adoption with your own networking will save you money but cost you time and advertising money. If you find your own birth mother with child, your costs will probably be $4000-10,000 for legal fees, counseling, medical if not covered by her insurance or Medicaid and travel expenses. The cost for private adoption varies greatly for each situation. There are a number of online registries to help you network like ours http://www.preciouskids.org/adopt/registry.html

Foster/At Risk Adoption- If your budget is such that you cannot afford to adopt privately or through an agency, the best choice would be a foster/at-risk adoption through your state. Most, if not all, of these children have some type of special needs. (i.e., drug exposure, alcohol exposure, emotional and physical abuse). You must be willing to accept the fact that the child may not ultimately be free for adoption in these instances.

The state pays for the cost of your home study. When a child becomes free for adoption, there are no fees to the adopting family. In fact many of these kids may come with a medical card and a monthly subsidy. It cannot be emphasized enough that this is an at-risk situation. There are many factors that come into play prior to a child being legally free for adoption, and each situation is unique and different.

International Adoption varies greatly for each country. Some countries will allow you to adopt infants under 1 year. Some have older children in orphanages and others are in private foster homes. International fees and travel can vary from $15,000-$40,000. Some countries will escort the child here to you.

Open Adoption http://www.openadoption.org/
Adoption Network http://www.adoption.org/

Once you have decided what kind of child you want, you can start to research your options. A homestudy is required for all adoption. It can be done by an agency, an independent social worker (if your state allows that), or the state if you are going through the foster system. The state foster system home studies are usually free but are also not usually usable for private adoptions. A regular homestudy will run $1000-3000.

HOMESCHOOL

Homeschool & Child safety have always been a passion of mine. I am mom to 4 great kids. Our youngest daughter (adopted at birth) has always been a bit of a wanderer and given me a few more grey hairs. I have been even more diligent about making sure she ALWAYS is wearing a physical ID product every day.

SID - Sensory Integration Disorder
My 4 1/2 yr old daughter Haley has recently been diagnosis with SID. This diagnosis was an answer to so many questions we have had about her - why she needed to be touched to sleep - why she would not eat certain foods - why she was always moving. This diagnosis has so many facets and looks differently for all children but mostly they either crave sensory input or avoid it. Their brain system to handle sensory information works differently than for other people.

Infancy - As a result Haley has tightly bonded to me as an infant. She solved all stressful situations by nursing. She wanted to be held at all times (mostly in a baby sling ). She cried if anyone else held her. She required one of us to be holding or touching her at all times in order to sleep. And she slept very little (30 minute naps). She needed the physical touch in order to sooth down to sleep.

Toddler - As a toddler she was constantly on the move. She is afraid of nothing. She is always looking to climb higher, jump taller, run faster, sing louder. So when we are out of the house there is always the worry that she will wander away. Her ID bracelet with my cell number and phone number in it, give me some peace of mind. When she was tiny I could keep her in a cart. As she is getting bigger that is harder.

Preschool - As a preschooler now, she is also sometimes without me: at school, church, a friends. I want to be sure if she should wander away from someone else she is protected. So she wears an ID bracelet (even when swimming) and has ID stickers in her shoes. I have taught her that if mom is lost to find another mommy and give them her shoe to call me. I also make sure if anyone else is caring for her they have a signed medical release card that explains her SID diagnosis and needs plus her doctors number.

SID - Sensory Integration Disorder is many times mis-diagnosed as ADHD. And while most ADHD kids also have SID not all SID kids are ADHD. SID can also be associated with Autism and Aspersers and other disorders. However SID can be the single diagnosis for a child, like Haley. It is suggested that roughly 25% of all kids have some form of SID but most are mild enough they function within it.

Therapy for her includes meeting with an occupational therapist weekly to give her tools to regulate her system. It also includes gymnastic class and dance class. After only 3 weeks I am seeing improvement in her behaviors and movements. One example is Haley was having a hard time learning to count. She could read words at age 3 but could not count to 3. I taught her to count by jumping on a small jogging trampoline. This helped her brain to process  the information more effectively since it gave her sensory input along with the
brain information.

Books - There is a great book called "Out of Sync Child" that is very worth reading if you think this might apply to your child. Also Fun Activities for The Out Of Sync Child .

There is also a yahoo group of support for mothers of SID children at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sensoryintegrationdysfunction/

I hope if you have special need kids like Haley you make sure they also wear physical ID every day to protect them and give you peace of mind.
