Getting Kids to Do Chores
Have you ever wanted to just throw your hands up in the air and scream because you just didn't/couldn't nag at the kids one more time to "do their chores?"

Well, I have found a fabulous product that will help you in this area others. It's called "Mom's Family Preserves Grin N Bear It Chores for Kids." Inside this wonderful jar are about 120-plus cards. Choosing chores from Mom's jar becomes a treat when the children know they may get lucky and choose one of Mom's special fun and reward cards too!

Getting started is simple. Personalize your jar by selecting the cards that are appropriate for your child or children. Rubber band the ones that are left and put them aside. Then, personalize the blank cards that have been included.

Next, check the fun and reward cards to see what's in there. Keep the ones you want in in the jar, take out the ones you don't want. It's that simple!

The final step is having the children choose their cards. You have to come up with what's best for you though. Here are a few suggestions:

Have them choose one or more cards for the week, choose one card a day (you can have them add a card a day, or have them do the one chore they picked each day).

In our family, the kids have regular chores they are expected to do. These chores are written on a sheet that is taped to the back of their doors. When they get bored with the routine--usually their chores don't seem to be getting done--I break from the mundane (about every third or fourth week) and tell them to go pick new cards from the chore jar. I usually have them pick four cards. The odds are pretty good they'll get a reward or silly card (as I call them). As a matter of fact, quite often one or all three of them have picked more reward cards than chores. If one of them gets four chores and the other gets 1 or more reward cards with their chores, I ask the one who got the reward card/s to fan out his reward cards and let the other child pick one. Now the child who has 4 chore cards gets to fan his cards and have the other child pick one. They both usually are involved in the reward/silly cards.

There are other jars too! This is a great way to get conversation going between family, friends, relatives, or God.

NOTE: At this time, we have not been able to find Mom’s Family Preserves anywhere. BUT, you can certainly make your own jars. Just get creative! Sit with the children and go over the chores of the home. Write them down on a list. Cut out rectangles from card stock. Then write each one from the list on a different card. Put those cards in a decorative jar and voila!

BACK TO SCHOOL

RECIPE

PEACH CREAM CAKE
Yield: 16 servings

1 Angel food cake*
1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk+
1 c Cold water
1 pk Vanilla pudding mix**
1 tsp Almond extract
2 c Whipping cream; whipped
1 pk Frozen sliced peaches++

Directions: Cut the cake into 1/2 inch slices; arrange half the slices on the bottom of a 13X9 inch baking dish. In a large mixer bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and the water; mix well. Add the pudding mix; beat well. Chill 5 minutes. Stir in the extract; fold in the whipped cream. Pour half the cream mixture over the cake slices; arrange half the peach slices on top. Repeat layering, ending with the peach slices. Chill 4 hours or until set. Cut into squares to serve. Refrigerate any leftovers... Note: Garnish with a few fresh peach slices if so desired...

SCHOOL

A New School Year

Depending on where you live school will be starting this month or next month. A new school year is usually exciting and scary at the same time. Most children won’t admit it, but they are ready to get back to school and see their friends. As much as I love not having a rigid schedule in the summer, I do miss the structure of the school year. We get up later in the summer and go to bed later as well.

When you think of a new School Year what are your first thoughts? Back to school shopping for clothes and school supplies. A big transition from elementary to middle school, or to high school, even college. A new teacher who you heard is strict or not strict enough? There can often be lots of anxiety with a new school year for parents as well as children.

Can I offer a few suggestions for your back to school list? Remember whose children they are. Yes they are our children, but they are God’s children. He cares about them and loves them more than we ever could. Pray for your children. Pray for their academics, choice of friends, study habits, and wisdom to make Godly choices. Pray for their teachers. If their teachers are not Christians, pray that God can use you to be an example to their teachers. Pray for the administrators in your child’s school. Pray for the safety of your child and all the children at their school. Pray that your children will see a Godly example in you, with how you handle school difficulties or problems with your children. Begin praying with other mothers for their children as well. We don’t have to carry the burden alone. Above all remember God is in control. I often have a difficult time remembering that principle.

In closing, God is a mighty God and he cares about our concerns. I often pray on the way to taking my children to school. I pray when my children are having difficulties with friends. God cares about everything in our lives and He truly cares about our children. My mother is a prayer warrior for my children and myself. May we all become prayer warriors for our children. Take your problems to Him and leave them there.
