Safety within city apartment buildings and with apartment-living in general, is a combination of physical barriers, technology and personal safety. The aspect of personal safety, as a proactive approach is of the utmost importance, preventing the vast majority of crimes from ever taking place.

Physical Safety

while your neighbours and the overall neighbourhood you live in may be safe, it is often guests and visitors that bring trouble and crime to familiar settings. In addition, those intent on crime seek out prime locations, both suited to clandestine operations and quick getaways, if needed. Unfortunately, apartments offer both of these aspects and more, appealing to criminals of many different levels.

Physical safety devices, such as locks on doors and windows, are your first line of defense, presenting a real, physical barrier to overcome, before entrance is granted. While locks are routinely circumvented, their presence is paramount in deterring and slowing crime; locks on your windows and doors are the first things criminals seek out, searching for a weak point that allows easy access. Adequate sizes of locks and layers of locks are the best physical defences, clearly displaying that you are security-conscious, while presenting a formidable obstacle to even the most determined criminals.

Technology

Technology has opened a huge range of options to those who live in apartment settings, including camera systems, security doors and even key-card access. In addition, there are several very affordable and easy to install security systems that include motion detection, window and door alarms for use within your individual apartment. Technology is a key weapon in the fight against crime and one of the most effective, although, the general population is becoming far too dependent on other measures, including technology, in lieu of the most important aspect of all: avoiding crime in the first place.

Protect yourself

The best tool against crime is your own mind, as you can easily avoid most instances with a few simple reminders. Do not attract criminals by leaving access points open or leaving the lights off for extended periods, these aspects alone attract more burglaries than any others. Traveling back and forth at night, particularly alone and at late hours, is also a sure way to attract the attention of those with ill-intent, regardless of your gender.

Apartments also provide a succession of blind spots, perfect for a host criminal activities, illustrating the need to know your surroundings and conduct your business accordingly. If ever in any doubt, avoid the areas in question completely and stick to well-lit, familiar paths that ensure your safety.

Apartment-living within the city limits is a great experience that is full of fun, entertainment and some of the most diverse populations around. There are higher crime rates in cities, this is true, but when approached with an understanding of the risks involved and how to avoid them, city apartment-living is safe and rewarding.
