STAFF: Introducing Tracey

My name is Tracey. I have been employed by MPK (My Precious Kid) for 2years. I am Kay’s Administrative Assistant and I do a number of jobs here at the store. My main job is customer service. If you call the store, you usually will end up speaking with me.

I have two boys, ages 16 and 10. They are my pride and joy! Being a parent has been the best job I’ve ever had. I have learned so much being a parent, probably more than going to college has ever taught me. I’ve been married for almost 22 years, to a most wonderful man. In my personal time, I like to read, bake, play on the computer, and listen to music. I also am active in a great church, where I serve as a Youth teacher.

I am really grateful for my job at My Precious Kid. I’ve learned so much since I’ve started working here. The safety information that MPK has is amazing. I wish that I had some of this information when I was a new parent. Also, the information regarding cloth diapers is excellent. I didn’t cloth diaper my children, yet with MPK adding the cloth diapers, along with all the information and cute patterns, it make me wish that I would have.
I enjoy working and being part of the team at MPK.

Potty Training 101: Night Training

Potty training is a process. We covered pre-training and potty training. However I am getting lots of questions about night training. So lets tackle that next. Night training for children can happen right from the beginning or years later. It has less to do with training and more to do with how hard they sleep. Night wetting also runs in families. So the main key is patience. And more patience.

When I day train I like to put them in the cloth training pants with a waterproof cover at night. This helps them feel the wet sensation while sleeping. (Three of my 4 children night trained by themselves about the time we complete day training.) For many children this is enough to help them start waking when they pee. That is the first step. And after a while they may start waking before they urinate. Parents remember that if they call to you from their bed to go potty you must act quickly to help get them to the potty. Some parents find having a potty chair in the bedroom is helpful during this phase.

Many children will urinate right after they wake up. So during your day time training process get to the child and take them to the potty as quickly as possible when they wake in the morning. Waiting will often mean wet trainers/diapers. Helping them learn to go to the potty first thing in the morning is a big step in their training.

No one likes dealing with a wet bed in the middle of the night. I found prepping the bed will make night wetting less frustrating. Put a waterproof pad over the mattress then a sheet. Then layer another pad and another sheet. Even a 3rd layer is helpful. Then if you have a wet bed at night strip off the top layer and put them back to bed.

Some children may sleep so deeply that they simply do not wake up when they need to go to the bathroom or even after they pee. 25% of 4 year olds still have not gained night time wetting control according to http://www.pottytrainingconcepts.com/A-Potty-Accidents-Nighttime.html

So how can you help the process?
1. Keep them in cloth trainers and waterproof diaper covers at night to help with feel wet.
2. Limit their fluids between dinner and bed
3. Take them potty 30 minutes before bed and again at bedtime.
4. Wake them to go potty when you go to bed. Often they will not fully wake but can still go potty for you.
5. For older kids set an alarm in the middle of the night and take them potty again. That helps train them to wake up.
6. Consider a bed wetting alarm.

Remember that night wetting is not voluntary. It is not a skill to be learned. It is more a matter of body awareness while sleeping. Never punish for bedwetting. It can be as frustrating for your child as for you. So patience is the best method.

When should you worry? I tell parents if you have a child going to kindergarden that is still wetting at night talk with your pediatrician to make sure their are no medical reasons for it. Some parents have found that a potty alarm at this age is the thing that helps finish the training process. http://www.pottypager.com/ For other children it simply takes time for their body to cooperate by waking when needed.

I hope you find this information helpful as you continue your potty training journey. Make sure and read our other potty training articles. Potty Training 101 – Pre-Training and Potty Training 101 – Day Training

Halloween Child Safety

It is that time a year. Halloween is only 2 weeks away. So many of us are deciding what our children will dress up as this year. My youngest daughter and the grandchildren are all going as Pirates. We even have a princess pirate.

So as a family how can you make your evening of customes and candy both fun and safe?

1. CHILD ID – first and foremost please make sure your children are wearing an ID that contains your cell phone number on it. Children can easily wander away and an ID bracelet or kids dog tag makes it easy for another parent to get your child back to you quickly.

2. DRESS WARMLY – If you are taking your children outside for trick or treating layer their clothing. I love t-shirt/onesies and leggings underneath costumes. They add a layer of warmth without much bulk.

3. PLAN A COURSE – If one parent is taking the children and the other is staying home, it is wise to plan where you are going and when you will return. Let your spouse know where you will be.

4. PUBLIC PLACES – Consider some of the safe daytime hour public events like at our local strip mall trick or treating. They are usually held in the late afternoon after naps and before dinner. Also many churches hold evening “Harvest Festivals”. I find these are my favorite activity of the night.

5. CHECK THE CANDY – Check the candy your children receive before giving it to them. Anything opened or torn should be discarded immediately.

6. NEVER ALONE – Stay with your children. If they are young enough to trick or treat they need parental surpervision. Only go to well lit houses. And travel in a group with others.

7. COSTUME SAFETY – Use face paint instead of mask so help them see more easily. Check costume for length so they do not trip. Give your child a flash light for better viewing. And consider reflective tape.

And this reminder about street safety from http://pediatrics.about.com

A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that during 1975-1996, the number of deaths among young pedestrians was four times higher on Halloween evening when compared with the same time period during all other evenings of the year. Halloween poses special risks to young pedestrians. For example, most of the time children spend outdoors is typically during daylight hours. However, Halloween activities often occur after dark. Also, children engaged in “trick or treat” activities frequently cross streets at mid-block rather than at corners or crosswalks, putting them at risk for pedestrian injury.  Many parents overestimate children’s street-crossing skills. The pedestrian skills of children are limited by several factors related to their physical size and developmental stage.

I will shop American!

I decide that I want to make a difference in our USA economy. So this holiday season I am making so choices.
1. I will buy locally whenever possible.
2. I will buy from small business owners rather than big box stores where I can.
3. I will buy USA made products as often as I can.

And as I small business owner I know that when customers shop in my store that those dollars positively affect our economy. It pays rent to a local landlord. It pays utilities to a local utility company. It provides taxes to our state. And it provides income for 6 local employees and their families. I appreciate those who choose to business with our small family owned business at My Precious Kid.

I talked to a local baby furniture store. She told me that people in her community come to her store and ask for help/education on the products. They handle the samples she purchased to share with her customers. Then they may go elsewhere or online to purchase for a bit less money. In the mean time she is out employee time and the cost of those samples to share. She can only stay open if she makes profit from the sales of products. So I will purpose to buy products where I go for education and to look at the products.

Did you know that many manufacturers have set pricing rules that your local stores have to follow. If they break the rules they can lose the accounts. And did you know that often the deal prices you find on amazon/ebay may be in violation of those pricing policies. So by supporting the local businesses you are helping them be successful while adhering to the rules.

USA made products may cost a bit more but they provide USA jobs, and pay USA taxes. When I bring USA made products into my store I can be assured the working conditions of the workers. So whenever there is choice I try to chose USA made over chinese made products. Here is a list of American made toys http://www.howtobuyamerican.com/content/ba-toys.shtml

So how can a budget conscious family shop locally. Ask the owner if they can match prices seen elsewhere (as long as it does not break the manufacturer pricing rules). Sign up for their newsletter to receive coupons or reward points. Follow their Facebook fan page to see specials and deals. And ASK if they have any special deals or coupons they can offer you.

American Express has gotten in the act. On November 26th we’re celebrating Small Business Saturday, encouraging everyone to shop at their favorite small businesses! Spread the word to all your friends and help make this year bigger than ever! http://aexp.co/h9u Last year I used this program to shop at a local toy store.

So will you make the choice this holiday season to support USA made products and small business owners? I will!
