Is My Child Ready for a Cell phone?

pastedGraphic.pdf
Has this ever happened to you? You volunteer in your preschool child’s class, and another kid keeps flipping out his real cell phone and showing it to the other preschoolers? For real, this happens, and it has a lot of parents asking, “When is a child old enough to manage the responsibility of a cell phone?”

The reality is that more and more young children are getting cell phones. The Center on Media and Child Health Website states that nearly 54 percent of 8 to 12 year olds will have one in the next three years, according to CNN.com. The biggest reasons that parents get cells for their children are for peace of mind, communication, and safety. But how do you know if your child is ready for a cell phone.

Is Your Kid Responsible Enough for a Cell phone?
So, at what point does having a cell phone makes sense? As children get older, and we’re not talking preschool age here, they become more independent and have more activities outside of school. A cell phone allows parents and children the ability to contact each other. It keeps communication open.

A family must have rules about a cell phone and its usage and parents need to consider if their child is mature enough to respect those rules. In fact, using and having a phone should be a family privilege. When the agreed upon rules are broken the privileges should be revoked. If a child is too young to understand and follow these family rules, then they are too young for a cell phone. If you’re not sure what guidelines you should use for your child, take a look at the following website issued by the WirelessFoundation.org.

A Few Things to Consider Before Taking the Kid and Cell phone Plunge
Before, getting a cell phone for your child, you need to consider a few important things. How much money are you willing to invest in the phone? The plan? How much control will you give your child over usage? What features will the phone need? When it comes to cost, there are lots of family plans and pay as you go plans available through both local and national cell phone providers. Shop around and find a plan and phone that will work best for you and your child.

When it comes to features, you need to decide what you want your child/teen to have access too. Many professionals are saying less is better. Cell phones with cameras, internet access, and too many games, give kids fingertip access to things you might not like. Don’t give your kid an open internet line to stuff like pornography and x-rated materials through an internet phone. Be sure to set careful guidelines on who your kid can call and what is appropriate to photograph. If you don’t talk about it, your kid won’t know.

School Cell phone Policies
It’s also important to let your child know what their school’s policy on cell phones is. If they are supposed to leave phones in their backpack or locker and only use them during breaks, then you need to be sure they follow the rules.

What Kind Of Parent Are You?

I heard a great teaching yesterday on parenting. The speaker said there are 4 kinds of parent. Which kind are you?

1. Those who fail to give their children either encouragement or boundaries. They allow the children to parent themselves, often thru neglect.
2. Those who tell the children what they should not do but fail to help them know what they should do. They are authoritative without being encouraging.
3. Those who give the children positive encouragement for what they should do without any boundaries or consequences. Child led parenting.
4. Those who give their children positive encouragement with boundaries and consequences. Loving balance of both sides.

I realized after raising 4 children that my children need both encouragement as well as the balance of boundaries. I love helping them explore the world and try new things. However as a parent I need to give them boundaries and consequences while they are growing up so they understand how to be a contributing member of society as adults. That meant requiring my kids to do things they did not always want to do like: shots, bedtime, car seats, chores, and discipline. It meant that is was my job to teach them the next skill when I knew it was time such as learning to fall asleep, potty training, eating with a spoon, and riding a bike. If I wait until they think they might be ready I often delay their independence.

I consider myself an active attached parent in that I have done night time parenting, extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and baby wearing. However I also do sleep training (not cry it out – I prefer no cry sleep solution method) in the first year to help them learn to fall asleep on their own. This helped my children to become much better sleepers. I nursed (even the child I adopted) however at about age one I start setting boundaries for how often they nurse, working down to only nap and bedtime nursing. I potty train all my children by their 2nd birthday because I know they can do it and they love the since of accomplishment.

There are lots of ways to parent. And we each get to find the way that works for them and their family. This just happens to be what we chose for our family. And I enjoyed the teaching this weekend and realized I was pretty balanced in parenting and can look at my children now and see that they are fabulous! I hope the style of parenting you chose is working well for your family too.

Imagine this…………

Imagine you are going to the state fair with your very tall husband. He is twice as tall as you. He requires you to hold his hand, all day up over your head.  And he pulls on your hand when he wants you to change direction. He holds your hand while you are trying to get close enough to see the exhibits. At the end of the day your arm is tired and sore.

This is how your child feels if he is forced to hold your hand all afternoon at an activity. You are trying to keep him safe. But he feels tired and pulled on. He has no freedom to explore the exhibits he most wants to see. So he is pulling against you most of the day as well.

If you have a chid with special needs you know that your child (with ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome, Sensory Integration) may be even more inclined to pull against the hand that holds him. Your unique chid may not even understand the dangers of wandering away.

If you have multiples (like my 2 yr old twin grandsons) you also know the challenge of keeping 2 (or 3) toddlers safe. They always seem to go in opposite directions. So as 1 parent with 2 or more kids you can not go after both at the same time. Yes they can do the stroller but they ache to get out and explore with everyone else.

Did you know the odds of your child wandering away at an event is MUCH greater than your child being abducted by a stranger? Most of us experience at least one event where our child gets out of sight, even for a short time, while we try to find them while the panic rises within us.

That is why I allow my child the freedom to explore while still keeping them safe by using a child safety harness. Finally he can explore. His arm is not help over his head. And he can truly enjoy the day. Are you letting your chid freely explore the activities you go to while keeping him safe?

There are lots of kinds of child safety harnesses and alternatives? Some look like back packs and have retractable tethers that are there when you need them? Which type fits your needs? Also have your child wear a physical ID with your cell phone number on it (ID Bracelet, shoe tag, or kids personalized dog tags).

Potty Training 101 – Pre-training!

I have found after training my own 4 children and helping dozens of other moms train their children, that pre-training is very helpful. In listening to many parents I have found this system is very helpful. And that boys especially need this pre-training routine. Purchase a potty chair at about 12 months. Put it in their play area and allow them to sit on it as they want (clothed). Over time it will become a regular comfortable item to them.

Some time between 12-18 months begin pre-training. I find that doing the pre-training for a full month before actual potty training is very helpful. Some moms tell me they have great success beginning at 12-15 months. Others prefer 15-18 months. It is totally up to you. Just make sure you have a month or so of pre-training before actual potty training.

Pre-training:
1. Sit the child on the potty chair (bare bottomed) with every diaper change that you are home.
2. Reward every time they sit calmly for 1-3 minutes with a treat.
3. Watch a potty video 1-3 times each day.
4. Read potty books to them several times a day.
5. Allow them to watch other family members sit to go potty.
6. Use potty words with them.

All these things help them begin to understand the process that is happening. When you catch them with a newly warm diaper tell them oh it looks like you went potty! Make it a normal part of conversation with them.

As you continue pre-training begin collecting the supplies needed for training!
10-12 pair of cloth training pants
2-4 diaper covers or nylon whisper pants
2-4 cloth diapers for night and nap times
Potty DVD
Potty Stickers
A travel potty seat
Rewards
Timer

After a month of the pre-training you may be ready for actual Potty Training 101!

I was able to train all of my kids by their 2nd birthday. Plus helped many other moms do the same! I find that doing it at this age frame reduced the amount of will battle over sitting and wearing training pants. Remember that until 1960 most all kids were completely trained by 18 months. It was only with the invention of disposable diapers that parents started waiting until age 2.5-3 to train their kids.

Join us at www.facebook.com/MyPreciousKid for discussions and help with potty training too!

Insuring Your Child’s Future

GUEST BLOGGER: Jessica Thorseon

There are few things that bring more happiness than spending time with your children.  Teaching a child and nurturing them so that their future can be full of great opportunities and adventures is one of the most rewarding things a parent can do.  We all anticipate watching our children up and have children of their own and find success and happiness in life.  As a parent, we would do anything in our power to make this possible.  One of the more popular ways to ensure that you child is protected is to purchase child life insurance.

Child life insurance acts differently than adult life insurance.  Children benefit from this insurance in many ways.  First, a whole life policy guarantees that your child will be able to continue to benefit from their policy as they age.  This is guaranteed even if they develop a disability that would have usually disqualified them from receiving life insurance at an older age.

In addition to being protected no matter their health situation, a child life insurance policy gains value over time.  The money that is paid monthly or annually towards premiums can be invested by the policy holder and gain interest.  This interest can be used to lower premiums, or can be taken out and used to pay for large expenses like college tuition.

Another option is a term life insurance policy.  This kind of policy expires after a number of years or once the holder reaches a certain age, but can provide some great benefits.  If a child becomes disabled it will help to greatly reduce the costs of medical bills or specialty treatments.  Additionally, in the very unfortunate event that a child should pass away, this policy will cover the expenses of a funeral.

Many people think that a life insurance policy is only beneficial if you are older and if you pass away, but this is not the case.  There are many unpredictable events that can happen in life and it is good to make sure your entire family is protected.  Take some time to learn about child life insurance and see if it makes sense for your family.

Business Building: What to post on Facebook

I have a very active busy facebook fan page with nearly 13,000 fans. We talk about lots of topics. And I post several times every day. I am often asked by new business what do I post on facebook? How much is enough? Too much? So I made a list of several things you could post each day. I recommend posting 4-8 times each day about an hour apart. Now the key is these post must be engaging and interactive. And if you are not posting at all right now then try posting once a day for a few days. then add a 2nd post per day and build up as your fans start engaging. Follow us at http://www.facebook.com/MyPreciousKid

If I post BUY MY STUFF each hour all day I would lose fans quickly. However if I give them reasons to interact then my fan numbers actual increase. Also I have found every time I post a product link on facebook my site traffic instantly jumps. So I realize I need to do that a couple times a day but not over and over. Asking questions is the best way I know to get fans to interact with you.

One key is to find a list of topics that fit your market and products that you can become an expert in. Do some research. And if a fan asks a question you do not know the answer to go google it and find some resources to share!

Some things you could post each day on Facebook.

1. Say GOOD MORNING and ask how you can help them today
2. Post a link to a PRODUCT/service (maybe a new product or item you want to promo)
3. Offer a COUPON code
4. Post a link to an ARTICLE that you wrote or one from someone else within your niche market
5. Tell what new iINVENTORY you got in stock today (or service your provided for a customer)
6. Ask a POLL question
7. Tell about an item that has gone on SALE
8. Post a SUBJECT and ask for questions
9. Post a topic and ask for OPINIONS
10. Ask them to all INTRODUCE themselves (name/state/kids ages)
11. Ask for a RECOMMENDATION of new products you should carry
12. Give a SHOUT OUT to another fan page that you like o find helpful
13. Share a TIP or trick that would be helpful to them
14. Share some UPCOMING news or product you have on the horizon
15. Post a link to your BLOG – maybe a new article just written
16. Share a LINK to another site that has resources that would be helpful to them
17. Ask a QUESTION
18. SHARE a success of something positive that happened in your business today
19. Tell where they can enter a GIVEAWAY for your prize
20. THANK them for being such great fans!

Business Building with Facebook

I am often asked how I have built such a great business following on facebook. I tell them “By consistent and regular posting and interaction with my followers”. So if you are new to business and want to build your following and business on facebook where should you start? Here is my list to get your started! Follow me on facebook to learn more. We talk about business building regularly!  http://www.facebook.com/MyPreciousKid

1. Donate a prize to a giveaway (1000 or more fan sponsor for best results). Make sure it is not a competing business but rather a business with similar niche customer but not competing products. This is the fastest way I know to start building a fan base. Make sure the event is following the new promotion rules (either the event is on their blog/site instead of FB, or they use an approved app on a FB app platform).

2. Once you have more than 1000 fans consider holding a giveaway of your own, asking others to sponsor a prize.

Make sure the event is following the new promotion rules (either the event is on your blog/site instead of FB, or use an approved app on a FB app platform).

3. Never spam another wall with your inks or sales! Never tag another page on your own wall if offering a sale or price or link in the post.

4. Interact with your fans regularly. This means posting every day, several times a day.

5. Ask your fans questions and get them interacting with you. Do not just post at them. Ask how you can help them?

6. Be helpful kind, gracious, gentle, compassionate. Use the golden rule.

7. Make a list of topics that you are or want to become an expert in that fits your market. Study up and be able to share tips, tricks, articles, and answer questions about your topic.

8. Do not post one right after another about items for sale or auctions. If having an action put it in your photo album and them post a link to the album daily.

9. Go to your page and select “Use facebook as page” and now you are posting in your business persona. Now go interact on other walls without spamming. When you post as your business persona there is no need to spam or post your link. It is there for all to see and click.

10. When you find a new page you like then 1)like with your personal persona 2) then change to your business persona and like them again and then post “Hello, I am your newest fan”. Your ink is there without spamming and you now are open to interaction with this new page.

11. Be helpful on other pages. Offer answers to their questions. Be kind to their customers. Never compete with them or tell their customers about your products without permission. Sell only on your own page.

12. Never be rude. Never tell another page that their product or manufacturer or other item is bad. Treat others as you would want to be treated. Encourage them. Support them. Be kind to them. They will return the favor!

So there it is in a nutshell. This is how I built a following of nearly 13,000 fans. And this is why I interact with my fans each and every day. Yes it takes time and discipline. However it works. My fans have become my customers. And my fans are faithful about promoting my business with other as well. How will you build your business on facebook?
