Making Your Own Baby Food

NANA AND THE BOYSMy daughter had twin baby boys last year. So she decided it would be a good idea to make her own homemade baby food. She knew it would save her family money. And she liked knowing what they were eating. She also raised a garden that made it even more cost-effective. So as she undertook this endeavor I began looking for products that would make it easier. And of course I wanted safe BPA free, and phthalate free containers.

NOTE: The photo here is me (Nana Kay) and my twin grandsons Micah & Mason age 1.

STEP ONE is a quality food processor or FOOD MILL. There are lots of option out there. I chose to carry the KIDCO electric food mill.  It is BPA free and just the right size.

STEP TWO is food containers to freeze the food in. We carry both BABY CUBES and BabySteps FREEZER TRAYS.  Both are BPA free safe materials that make storing your baby’s food safe.

STEP THREE is feeding your baby. We found an adorable BabySteps BABY FEEDING DISH. It is also BPA free and safe for your baby. The freezer food trays cubes are the right size for this dish.

STEP FOUR is table foods. Now that the boys have just turned 1, these TODDLER BITES FOOD CUTTER work very well. The boys have recently discovered hotdogs.///

SIPPY CUPS are another need for your growing baby. We found the wonderful SAFE SIPPY CUP line. They cute, safe and work great. We have them in green, blue and pink.

So if you have decided to make your own baby food, these great products will give you a start. If you use and like these products please send us an email with you comments to kay at MyPreciouskid.com

Summer Camp Safety

Your child wants to go to summer camp with their friend.  How do you make sure your child is safe?

1.    CHECK OUT the camp. Is it accredited? Do you have references from others who have attended the camp? What is their camper to cabin leader ratio?

2.    MEDICAL – Does your child have any special needs? Require medication? How does the camp handle these needs for your child? Call the camp and ask in advance.

3.    ID CHILD – Make certain your child wears some ID each day. ID bracelet or kids dog tags attached to their belt loop. This protects your child if they get separated during an outing.

4.    LABELS – It is important to label all of your child’s belongings with stickers or iron on labels. Make sure their things come home with them.

5.    PREVIEW – Will the camp allow you to come is advance to walk thru the camp grounds with your child?

6.    CONTACT INFO – Get emergency contact info for the camp.

7.    LETTERS – Send your child with pre-addressed stamped postcards to write home.

8.    PHOTOS – Send your child with a disposable camera to take pictures.

9.    CLOTHES – I found it helpful to pack each days clothes/underwear/socks in a 2 gallon zip-lock bag. Then they can change each day putting the dirty clothes back in that bag. Label each clothing item.

10.    MAIL – send letters and packages to your child starting the day before they go. Mail is a huge part of camp.

I was recently interviewed about Summer Camp Safety by KOIN TV. The program will air Monday May 17th at 5 pm pacific time. Since them a few people have asked me to write an article about Summer Camp Safety. So this article is the result of that.
