How to Succeed in Starting Your Own Business

I have had the privilege of working with 3 young women starting businesses recently. Two are starting in Avon and 1 is in Avocare. I wrote this article to help them get started http://www.mypreciouskid.com/articles/start-a-business-101-directsales.html .  I am excited to see where they take their business. I see such promise in each of them. I know I can teach them but their success it really up to them.

In the last 8 years I have seen many new businesses like mine come and go. People ask me what makes yours a success. I tell them it is a few things:

1. Knowing that God has called me to this business
2. PRAYER
3. God’s blessing
4. Lots of hard work and long hours
5. Perseverance
6. Pushing through the road bumps to keep going
7. Working the business every workday
8. Commitment

So who does make it business?

GROUP ONE 70%: These will buy some products, talk to a few people, maybe throw up a website and then say the products will not sell and quit their business. They will blame the products rather than see they have not really given the business a fair shot. I had one person wanting to return products that would not sell after only 30 days. Building a business takes time and hard work. There is really not a fast track. Those looking for a way to make some fast income will rarely make it in business. They often go from company to company trying to find the right product but never stay with one thing long enough to succeed.

GROUP TWO 20%: These will work their business for a few months and see some success. They will do the business building and start getting the sales. Then they realize the amount of work and time it takes and decide they really do not want to spend the time needed to run a business. Or perhaps it grows too quickly and they simply cannot keep up. Or they let others things in life take the time they need to build the business. They make the decision that business is not really what they wanted.

GROUP THREE 10%: Those who succeed are people who have worked their business diligently. They realize a business takes time, commitment, perseverance and some cash risk to get started. Every week day they spend time building their business, making contacts, researching their market, and getting themselves out there. They start with a few products and as business build they add more. They get themselves and their products in front of customers every week.

Along the road I have found many others who ask to what I am doing and sign up with my wholesale program at http://www.mypreciouskid.com/wholesale.html . Several of them have done very well. They have built their unique niche market a bit different from my own.

If you are considering starting a business, which group will you be in? Will you do the homework and know what business fits you? Will you learn the software, marketing and other things necessary to run your business? Will you push thru the bumps in the road and keep working to build a successful business? Will you commit to the time needed each week to run a successful business? Or will you be in the 90% who say either it cannot be done or I really do not want to do this?

If you are looking for some help I have written some training articles at http://www.mypreciouskid.com/articles/ I suggest printing the business articles and make a notebook of resources like this to read and use to motivate you. Also I recommend joining some yahoogroups of like-minded people who will encourage you in your business. Write out your goal. Find other success business owners to learn from. And above all enjoy the process. Building a business is really a journey not a destination.

Well said, Kay. I have had my business for 11 years now, and I had to really stay strong the first year or two. I just broke even the first year, but we knew we were going in the right direction and stuck with it.
I think it is very helpful for people to join a group of like-minded business people, either a local group or an online email group. The encouragement you can offer each other is priceless.

Hi Kay, that link that is not clickable at the top of the article put in the anchor text for the title of the article and title attribute (tag) and link it to the article – better seo ;) Make your sub heading a heading tag as well. Ditto on your link at the bottom, call it Getting started in Business or something but make anchor text and title attributes .. if this blog does not have a easy editor make the link in expression web and paste in the code in the html view instead. Though it should do its wordpress. I came here via your tweet on this article:)

    Happy New Year

    Tina
