Bathroom Safety for Kids
Did you know that there are “danger zones” in your house? Especially when it comes to your children, the two hot spots, or danger zones are the bathroom and the kitchen. We are focusing on the bathroom and how to make it a safer place, especially for your children.
The bathroom has several things that make it dangerous for children. These include: toilet, bathtub, garbage can, medicine cabinet and possibly items under the sink. Other possibilities include burns and electrical risks.
The first of the dangers is the toilet. If you have a little one you probably don’t have to be told that they seem to be fascinated by the toilet, especially the water. However, for small children this can be dangerous as they can easily fall into it and might even drown. If you have a mobile toddler then a toilet lid lock will give you peace of mind.
Secondly is the bathtub, not only is there the drowning risk, but the other risk involves the temperature of the water. This should always be tested before putting a child in the bathtub and a child should never be left alone in a bathtub. We found a Bath Tub Alarm that will tell you if the water is too hot, plus alarm if you leave a tub filling that might over flow.
The garbage can is an additional hazard. Before children, most of us never considered what we threw away in our bathroom garbage, but after having children this is a different story. We must be careful as little hands will reach and grab almost anything, from razors, to feminine products. Consider using a bathroom garbage can with a lid.
The medicine cabinet is the next place you must consider. Make sure that it is locked and that all medicines are sealed properly and put away. One out of 5 toddlers can open bottles with child proof lids. You want to at least be sure they are out of reach of your children. I moved mine to an upper kitchen cabinet instead of the bathroom.
Another possibility for danger is if you have cleaning supplies or other items stored under your sink. You will either want to move these out of reach of your children or you will want to lock the cabinet so that the children can not get to these items. Magnetic cabinet locks can keep these secure from your children.
Two final risks include electrical shock and burning. There are items always stored and used in the bathroom such as space heaters, hairdryers, curling irons and other personal accessories that must be properly used so that they do not cause electrical risks. Burning is another risk that these items may cause as well. Safety precautions must be taken in order to keep your children safe from these risks.
Be aware and be thorough when preparing your bathrooms to safely allow your children inside. Child proof this room with locks and latches to keep your kids safe. And always supervise your children when they are in the bathroom. Our Bathroom Safety Kit can help start this process.
