I’m not sure what state you are in, but here in Indiana CPS (Child protection services) says as long as they know how to dial 911 on the telephone and can communicate that something is wrong. I certainly don’t agree with that because I had a little girl that called my house wanting to know if I had seen her mommy and she hadn’t been home all day. Things like that should NEVER be allowed to happen.

It’s also important to note the maturity level of each child at 10, 11, 12. My firstborn, no way I’d leave him alone at 10, by 11-12 for short times. My female 11 year old, was much more savvy of what was going on around her. By 12 she could pretty much run the whole household on her own, so is now, at 13, a very responsible and capable sitter (and is also CPR certified) for her younger 4 siblings. Birth order tends to have a different impact on how aware, and capable they are.

Another nice way to ease into babysitting is to hire a girl as a “mothers helper”. In this scenario, you are HOME, but getting work done in a seperate space than your children and then “sitter”. If she needs you, she can easily come get you. Your kids get used to her, she gets used to your kids, and you get used to her.

My daughter always loved when I had a “mothers helper” over. I feel this job can be done by a 5th grader. In this case, young is good, because the girls seem more intersted in interacting, AND, are less likely to cancel due to other activities.
