Milk Allergy & Reflux in Babies
I nursed completely my first 3 children. And none of them had any food allergies. When we adopted our 4th child I learned more about the world of food allergies. Babies can have milk allergies. And up to 40% of babies with reflux also have a milk protein intolerance.
My last daughter had some food allergies as a baby: milk, eggs, soy and peanuts. I learned to be very careful. She was adopted at birth. I did adoptive breast feeding but had to also supplement for the first few months. It took us several months to find the right formula to supplement with becasue of her milk allergy. Nestle Goodstart was the only thing she tolerated well. We know now her nilk allergy was probably a CASEIN intolreance.
Fast forward 6 years and my first granddaughter was born. She also had reflux. Her mama nursed her as well but supplemented as well because of some supply and latch issues. She reactive negatively every time mama consumed milk products. She also reactived poorly ( gassy grumbly tummy) to most formala except Nestle Good Start.
Now 2 years later my twin grandsons have been born. They have reflux. They also have fussy gassy tummies. Mama is nursing but supplements occassioanly to help when supply is low. They have not handled the Nestle Goodstart well. So we are on a search for the right supplemnt for them too. She has taken all dairy our of her diet as well.
*******************************************
In the process this is what I have learned:
Breast milk is Whey (protein) and Lactose (sugar)
Most formula is Whey, Casein (protein), and Lactose.
Babies can react to either of the 3 ingredients.
************************************
Nestle Good start is Whey/Lactose (no casein) so most breastfed babies do well on this.
Similac is Whey/Lactose/Casein
Soy Formula has no whey or cows milk
Lact-free Formula is whey/casein
**********************************
Up to 40% of babies with reflux has a mil protein intolerance. For those babies soy or another whey free formula will be best. And if mama is breastfeeding then she should not consume as dairy products.
I hope this information is valuable to another mama looking to help their child as well.
