Child-Proofing Your Home is a Must

Going to a friend’s house who does not have children is a nightmare for me. I have three small children who like to get into everything. Well, at least the oldest two do, as they are more mobile. I cringe at thinking of them being in a home where absolutely nothing is child proofed. You know no protection for protecting my children from things that will or could harm them.

This includes everything from electrical outlets, to easy to open doors, to heavy furniture. It could even be true for staircases, bathtubs, and surge protectors.

To truly protect your child in your home you need to think of even the smallest ways that they could be harmed. My soon to be two-year-old recently learned how to unlock the back door. Now, we must be much more careful with her around doors especially those going into areas of our house that may be dangerous or to outside. This is where door knob covers can serve to protect your child from harm.

Large heavy furniture can also cause concern. Children often times try to climb these type pieces, which could result in the furniture turning over on them. Safety straps can be attached to these furniture pieces and the strap attached to the wall to ensure your child’s safety. TV straps are also very importnat as a falling TV can kill a child.

Stairs are another place in a home that can be dangerous for children. Baby gates are the easiest way to protect your child from climbing the stairs and possibly falling on them. Use baby gates at the foot of the stairs or at the entrance to the staircase to help protect your child.

Another important area that you need to be sure to make inaccessible to your child is anywhere that you store items which may contain poisons or be harmful to them if they were to ingest them. This may be under your kitchen sink, in a utility closet or in your bathroom cabinets. Be sure to use protective devices in this area as well which will keep your child out of harm’s way.

This is not an exhaustive list but I am sure that it covers quite a few of the possible things that can be harmful to your child in your home or another person’s home that you want to be sure and make sure that your child is protected from at all times. My Precious Kid also has a Home Safety Kit with 46 products.
