GUEST POST: Tip-Over Deaths – What They Are and How to Prevent Them

They may not make the news very often, but tip-over injuries and deaths are fairly common. In fact, a November 2012 report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that from 2009 to 2011, an estimated average of 43,200 people were treated in hospital emergency departments each year for tip-over injuries relating to furniture, televisions, or appliances. Of these incidents, 25,400 or 59% involved children under 18. Needless to say, this type of accident is something that any parent should be aware of, and it makes sense to want to learn a bit more about how and why something like this might occur.

Facts about Tip-Over Deaths

Safety BracketsSome important figures relating to tip-over incidents as per the CPSC report referenced above include:

  • From 2000 to 2011, there were 349 fatalities relating to product instability and tip-over incidents. Of these, 294 or 84% involved children ranging in age from one month to eight years old.
  • 69% of estimated emergency department-treated injuries and 77% of fatalities were sustained in residential settings.
  • The most common injuries sustained due to a tip-over incident were: contusions or abrasions (39%), injuries to internal organs (15%), lacerations (14%), and fractures (13%).
    • The most common pieces of furniture involved in product instability or tip-over injuries for kids under 18 were: tables (34%); chests, bureaus, and dressers (28%); and shelving, shelving units, and bookcases (19%).
  • 70% of children fatalities involved televisions or televisions and furniture tipping over together. 26% involved just furniture, and the remaining 4% involved appliances.

How to Avoid Tip-Over Accidents

Although it’s impossible for even the most vigilant parent to prevent every accident, there are a number of steps you can take to make your home a safer place and protect against tip-over incidents. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Anchor all appliances with L-brackets – Freestanding appliances like fridges and ovens can tip over if a child hangs on the door, but a small and inexpensive metal bracket can help prevent this by anchoring it down. These brackets sometimes come with the appliance, but if not, you can usually get one at any home improvement store.
  • Secure heavy furniture – Similarly to appliances, bulky and heavy pieces of furniture can fall over onto children, bringing everything on and in that furniture down with it. Many furniture manufacturers and resellers offer inexpensive anchors which can be connected to the furniture and anchored into the wall to prevent the piece from tipping over if it should be pulled upon. Someone at your local furniture or home improvement store should be able to show you how to install it.
  • Invest in a baby gate – If your children are still young enough for it to be effective, a baby gate can be invaluable in keeping kids away from dangerous areas like bedrooms and living rooms with heavy furniture. Choose a gate that installs with hardware rather than tension rods; it may be less portable, but it’s also more secure.
  • Always supervise – This should go without saying, but always watch your children when they’re in an area that contains the potential for a tip-over accident. Even if your own home has been fully baby-proofed, you’re bound to visit a friend or family member who may not have tied in their furniture or taken the same precautions, and you’ll want to make sure your kids don’t put themselves in any potentially
  • Teach children safe habits – Your watchful eyes won’t always be around to make sure your children are playing safely, so it’s important to teach them not to climb or pull on dangerous items around the home.

These are just a few suggestions for helping your child avoid injury or worse due to falling furniture or appliances. When it comes down to it, the best weapon against such tragedy is often simple knowledge – the more aware you are of potential hazards, the easier it will be for you to take steps to mitigate risk, and in the end, that’s the best any parent can really do.

My Story Of Adoption

Haley - An adoption Story

In 2000 we were thrilled to adopt a newborn baby girl. You can read about the beginning of Haley’s story at http://www.mypreciouskid.com/articles/haleys-adoption-story.html

Haley was born to teenage parents, the product of a summer camp romance. We adopted her as a new born, taking her from the hospital at 48 hours old. I was so blessed to even breastfeed Haley. That trip is filled with sweet memories.

The night we left the hospital we met with her birth family at a local church and had a blessing ceremonyHaley - An adoption Story where they entrusted her to us. It was beautiful evening filling with joy and grief and and the love for a child. They said good-bye and we left with our new daughter. Five days later we left Nebraska to bring Haley home to Oregon.

When Haley was 4 years old her maternal birth grandmother and great-grandmother traveled to Oregon to see family. So on that trip they came to see us. Her grandmother had not seen Haley since the night they said good-bye when she was 2 days old. Her great grandmother had never seen Haley. It was such a great joy to spend time with them. They got to meet our children and our parents. Both of them talked about how much Haley reminded them of Connie when she was a little girl.

Haley - An adoption StoryWhen Haley was 10 years old we went to Nebraska and spent several days with Haley’s birth family. We saw her birth mother Connie, Connie’s parents and siblings, Connie’s husband and 2 children plus 2 nephew. It
was delightful time getting to know this sweet family even more. Haley was pretty quiet when we arrived but warmed up at the mention of going in the swimming pool with the kids. We ate meals with them, went shopping and attended church with them. Haley was old enough to have good memories of that trip.

This week for Haley’s 13th birthday, her birth mom Connie and her husband Bryan have come to Oregon to help us celebrate. Our children had never met Connie, so we had a fun family dinner filled with all of our children and grandchildren plus my husbands parents. It was so much fun. Connie’s husband hit it off right away with my father-in-law and my son-in-law! My oldest daughter Melissa is just younger than Connie, and they have been Facebook friends So they also hit it off well. It was fun to watch Haley really interact with Connie this trip. She was very comfortable and had a great time sharing about her life.

Haley - An adoption StoryConnie and Bryan spent today driving to the Ocean, since they had never either one seen the ocean before. It is only an hour from us. It made me realize how much we take living so close to the ocean for granted. Then they returned to have dinner with us this evening. Tomorrow Connie is taking Haley shopping for clothes as her birthday gift. I am sure it will be lots of fun for all of us.

I have been asked before if having this open relationship worries me. My answer has always been no. Why worry about sharing more love with a child? Why worry about giving Haley a sense of where she came from? Haley is secure in who she is and who loves her. A child can never have too many people who love her. Connie continues to tell her that seeing her with us confirms in her heart that she made the right decision when placing her with us when she was born.

Adoption is a beautiful gift of life. I thank God often for the gift of a daughter we have been given. And we thank Connie for choosing life for Haley!

Facebook Giveaway Within The Rules

Facebook Giveaway

Since the promotion rules have changed on Facebook, many pages have either continued doing their giveaways against the rules or struggle with how to comply. The new rules are at https://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php If you have a Facebook Fan Page for your business then you need to read and follow these rules. Comment giveaways, like votes and referral contests are no longer allowed.

Velvet Burger and Hell Pizza are two examples of pages that were shut down for running illegal contests. Here is a blog post about what happened. http://www.marketinggum.com/what-you-cannot-do-on-facebook-page-admins-read-these-rules/

As a business owner I wanted to make sure I was acting in integrity and running a promotion that benefitted my fans and was not against the rule. I did some research and found a free app that is Facebook compliant.

RAFFLECOPTER https://www.rafflecopter.com

I just finished a 2 week giveaway using Rafflecopter. Each of the 12 sponsors (plus my 2 pages) gained 400-500 fans. And the winner won a $309.99 Diono Radian R120 Car Seat. Many have asked me to outline how I did this event.

1. I posted on my pages asking for other business pages that would like to sponsor the event. I created a google doc so they could easily give me all the info needed for me to create the event. I charged each sponsor $25. I received 12 sponsors in less than a week and then closed the doc. The document also outlined their duties and their agreement to promote the event on their pages and blogs as well.

2. I asked each sponsor for their Facebook fan page link, web site link, plus one other social media action they would like those entering to complete (follow on twitter, follow on Pinterest, subscribe to a blog or subscribe to a newsletter).

3. I created a facebook group so we could all talk and share together.

4. Then I created the Rafflecopter widget with the 2 actions for each sponsor. I added the widget to my blog and also linked to each sponsors website so they gained incoming links. This gave each person up to 46 entries into the promotion if they did all the actions. http://www.mypreciouskid.com/blog/2013/01/diono-radian-r120-car-seat-giveaway/

5. Rafflecopter has an easy add to Facebook tab option. So each of the sponsors and myself added the widget to our pages. Mine is at https://www.facebook.com/MyPreciousKid/app_228910107186452 So 14 pages were promoting this event.

6. Then on the starting date we all promoted it where ever we could. I did a search for “Rafflecopter linky” and posted the event on lots of pages with these. When promoting the event I used my blog link as I find those on phone often have a difficult time entering thru the Facebook tab widget. This also increases my blog traffic and subscribers.

7. I ran the event from February 1 – 15th, 2013. We had 12,876 entries. Each sponsor gained 400-500 new fans. I had Rafflecopter select a winner. I emailed the winner and gave them 48 hours to respond. The winner did so, then I ship out the prize. The amount I charge the sponsors pays for the seat and the shipping.

Ollie’s Story – Child Danger – Your washing machine!

Ollie's Story

Hi Im Tiffany Hebb.
A mother to two children, one in heaven and one here on earth.

Ollie and Poppy.

My sweet 21 month old, Ollie tragically left this earth 9 months ago. He climbed up and fell into my washing machine. I was at home and never heard a sound. He was such a smart and curious boy. I want to spend my life warning other mothers of this weird and-not common-danger. We did laundry together every day. He had a stool he would push up so he could reach to throw the clothes in. I was so happy to have Ollie help me, he was my little buddy. He loved it just as much as I did. I never, ever could have imagined something he loved so much could be such a danger and take his life.

Poppy

My washing machine was a top loader. It never shut off when the lid was open and didn’t have a lock.

I want all to be aware of this danger.

Please share my tragedy to make EVERY-SINGLE-PARENT-AWARE.Buy a lock, get a new washer if you have to. Do whatever you need to do to make the laundry room a safe place in your home.

You can read my full story here.

GUEST POST: The Dangers of Honey to Babies

The Dangers of Honey for BabiesHoney – friend or foe?

As a new mother, with a million new facts to store, I knew that honey was on the “do not touch list” for babies.  It had something to do with Botulism, which can’t be good, but those were all the details I needed to know, because I knew not to feed honey to my baby, because the books said not to.

Then one day, as I’m picking up my 7 month old from daycare, the lady casually tells me that my daughter really enjoys her pacifier dipped into honey.  I went from calm, happy Mom to Momzilla in about a nanosecond!  What did you feed my daughter without my approval?  Don’t you know that honey is on the top of the “do not feed” list?   “Why?” was the response.   “Because of botulism!”  But that’s where my arsenal of information ran out.

I immediately called the Pediatrician, and here’s the lowdown.

Raw honey can carry botulism spores.  For the average adult, this is no problem, as our digestive systems are able to kill them.  However, babies’ digestive systems are not.  The botulism spores, when ingested, can multiply and eventually cause paralysis.  What’s worse is that the incubation period of these spores can be up to 30 days after the ingestion of the honey, so you have to be diligent in monitoring your child for a month.   It’s very serious.  On the other hand, the good news is that it’s also very rare.  Babies are most at risk from 0-6 months, a little more resistant in months 7-12, and generally low risk after one year.  Honey that is older is also a higher risk than newly collected honey, as the spores, if they are present, will have had more time to multiply.  The other good news, is that if it’s caught early, it is highly treatable.

Things to look for:  lethargy, inability to hold head upright and constipation, to name a few.

Keep in mind that cooked honey is not a problem.
